Laxative indicated for the treatment of occasional and chronic constipation in adults, adolescents and children.
It is based on polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Psyllium. In the presence of liquids, the combination of these substances mechanically exerts a laxative effect due to the increase in stool volume. The physiological result is better propulsion of softened stools through the colon and easier bowel movements.
Preservative-free. Gluten-free.
Ingredients
Polyethylene glycol; psyllium seed (Plantago psyllium) husk; guar gum; citric acid; orange flavouring; silicon dioxide; sweeteners: sorbitol, acesulfame K, sucralose.
Directions for use
• Adults: 2 sachets a day, preferably morning and evening.
• Children and adolescents aged 6 to 14: 1 sachet a day.
Open a sachet and pour the contents into a tumbler (200 ml). Fill with still (non-sparkling) water. Stir well for about 10 seconds and drink immediately after dissolving the powder. Any thickening of the solution is a characteristic of the product. For best results, drink 1-2 more glasses of water afterwards. It can be taken at any time of day, at least half an hour before going to bed.
In general, treatment lasts about 2 weeks. If constipation is caused by a disease such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis, or if you are taking other products that cause constipation, your doctor may advise you to take the product for longer than 2 weeks. Generally, in long-term treatment the dose is 1 sachet a day.
When it must not be used
Do not use in case of:
• oesophageal or gastrointestinal stenosis;
• bowel blockage (intestinal obstruction, ileus);
• perforation of the intestinal wall;
• serious bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or toxic megacolon;
• individual hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Interactions with other products
Because of the faster gastrointestinal transit induced by the product, using it together with other products or medicines may temporarily reduce their intestinal absorption. In addition, Psyllium seeds may enhance the effect of cholesterol-lowering and blood glucose-lowering products or medicines. In such circumstances, it is therefore advisable to take the product at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking such products or medicines; in any case, consult your doctor.
Side effects
The medical device is usually well tolerated, as its mechanism of action is physical/mechanical and does not depend on systemic absorption.
While taking it, side effects such as indigestion, stomach ache or rumbling, bloating, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, anal irritation and mild diarrhoea may occur. These effects improve on reducing the dose. In case of allergic reactions, stop taking the product and contact your doctor. If you notice any side effect, inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Warnings
Safety of use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been demonstrated. In such circumstances, consult your doctor.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Avoid contact with the eyes.
Storage and expiry
The expiry date is shown on the pack and on the sachet; it refers to the product in intact packaging, correctly stored. Do not use after this date or if the pack is open or damaged.
Keep the device tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from light and heat.
