Tris-NAC
Description
Sterile solution.
Tris-EDTA buffer + N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) with high hygienic strength for dogs and cats.
Tris-EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid) has bactericidal activity on non-growing bacteria located within the biofilm (Ciofu et al, 2017); in combination with Tromethamine (Tris) it damages bacterial cell walls and increases penetration into bacterial membranes; it is well tolerated and not ototoxic; it acts in synergy with chlorhexidine (Guardabassi et al, 2010). Recently, an in vitro study showed that Tris-EDTA is a highly effective aid, combined with antibiotics, in the treatment of chronic cases of Pseudomonas otitis with potential biofilm (Pye et al, 2014).
NAC is an N-acetylated derivative of the amino acid cysteine; it has a mucolytic action, disrupting the production of exopolysaccharides and thus weakening the EPS matrix. It has recently been used in eight clinical studies as an adjuvant treatment to disrupt mature biofilm and prevent its formation, and has shown an excellent safety and efficacy profile.
Applying the combination of Tris-EDTA and NAC to the skin and ear before topical products such as chlorhexidine, antibiotics or synthetic antimicrobial peptides therefore increases the permeability of mature biofilm and consequently its breakdown, effectively helping to overcome the problem of resistance to the classic antibacterial therapeutic approach.
