Alcohol-free extract traditionally used for its soothing action in allergic and rheumatic conditions, and as a vasoprotective, purifying, diuretic and diaphoretic. The bud derivative, obtained from fresh buds, is traditionally known for a marked soothing and anti-allergic action and for its synergy with other bud remedies with which it is often combined. The action of the bud macerate (M.G.) is directed mainly at the adrenal glands, where it stimulates the cortex to release substances with anti-allergic and soothing action, behaving in a way often compared to a natural cortisone, but without its side effects. The soothing and anti-allergic activity is thought to be exerted both directly, by inhibiting the enzyme chains that produce prostanoids, and indirectly, by stimulating the adrenal cortex to release corticosteroids that act as activators of the body's own response to inflammation. Regarded as a multipurpose draining remedy, it is one of the most valued herbal aids as a systemic anti-allergic and soothing remedy. It is traditionally used in acute allergic conditions: rhinitis, sun allergy (combined with Fig M.G.), headaches (combined with Rosehip M.G. and Linden M.G.), allergic dermatitis and hives, and allergic bronchial asthma and bronchitis. It is also traditionally used as a support in general and local inflammatory conditions such as arthrosis, coxarthrosis, polyarthritis, viral feverish and flu-like conditions, tonsillitis, ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids.
