Liquid paraffin
Sella
Description
Oily lubricant laxative indicated:
-in case of occasional constipation;
-for those who cannot strain to pass stools;
-after abdominal surgery, to avoid the formation of particularly hard stools that could cause difficulty with bowel movements and consequent excessive, potentially harmful abdominal straining.
Sella Liquid Paraffin coats the faecal material and creates a lipid film along the intestinal walls, slowing the physiological absorption of water.
The water not absorbed by the intestine helps soften the stools. In addition, Sella Liquid Paraffin lubricates the stools, making their passage through the intestine easier, without irritating the mucosa.
Directions for use
The product is recommended when softer stools and faster transit through the intestinal loops are needed, or in the presence of diverticula.
It is particularly suitable for people for whom excessive straining during bowel movements is not advisable (for example in case of hernia, hypertension, vascular disorders of the anus or rectum, haemorrhoids, recent surgery to the abdomen, intestine or rectum).
Do not use the product in case of:
-hypersensitivity (allergy) to the ingredient;
-nausea, vomiting, acute abdominal pain or abdominal pain of unknown origin;
-intestinal obstruction or stenosis;
-disorders of the gastrointestinal tract such as appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin;
-acute haemorrhoidal crisis with pain and bleeding;
-severe dehydration;
-people with difficulty swallowing or with conditions (e.g. hiatus hernia) or circumstances (e.g. debilitated, bedridden patients) involving a risk of regurgitation;
-colostomy/ileostomy;
-concomitant use of other laxatives or stool softeners.
Note: always consult your doctor or pharmacist if symptoms persist.
Take the product during or after meals, preferably in the evening and at least one hour before going to bed.

Warnings
Products with a laxative effect should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. A diet rich in fluids enhances the effect of the product. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Possible side effects: metabolic and nutritional disorders. Liquid paraffin may interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble substances, such as vitamins A, D, E and K, especially after prolonged use of the product. Isolated cramping pains or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation. Rectal seepage (leakage, dripping) of paraffin with consequent anal irritation and itching, rectal bleeding, especially after prolonged use of the product. Lipoid pneumonia and oil embolism due to accidental inhalation of the product.
Overdose and misuse: misuse of laxative preparations (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) may cause abdominal pain and persistent diarrhoea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. Fluid and electrolyte losses must be replaced. Electrolyte imbalances are characterised by the following symptoms: thirst, vomiting, weakness, oedema, bone pain (osteomalacia) and hypoalbuminaemia. In the most severe cases dehydration or hypokalaemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially with concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids. If episodes of constipation recur, a doctor should be consulted.
